New York to Pilot Pay-by-Phone Parking Meters

Anybody who owns a car in this city is all too familiar with that heart-sinking feeling you get when you approach your vehicle and spot something orange poking out of a door or wiper.  In the next couple months, New York will kick off a pilot program that allows people to fill select parking meters using their cell phones. Better yet, drivers will be alerted when their time is running low and given the option of feeding their meters remotely. With expired meter tickets running $65 a pop, this could be life changing.

“The main goal here is convenience for drivers,” says Deputy Transportation Commissioner Schaller. The technology even allows drivers to be credited for unused time, but whether the city feels compelled to give back money they’ve already pocketed is another story.

The pilot neighborhood(s) have yet to be selected, but “officials” say they’ll probably test it on busy commercial strips with retail and restaurants. Look for it in a neighborhood near you.

Now, New York, how about phone alerts for street sweeping?
