Are Newspaper Boxes Bringing Down The Neighborhood?
It’s New York–if you have a pet peeve, somebody’s already beat you to the punch and started a cause. For example, Upper East Siders Against Newspaper Boxes. Okay, agreed, on the surface it sounds a little out there, but all of us have noticed that half these boxes don’t even have any publications in them, and when they get dirty and tagged with graffiti, they’re certainly an eyesore. But wait–there’s more. Community Board 7 transportation committee co-chair Andrew Albert claims they’re also a a security hazard, because they can be used to stash all kinds of objects.
Civitas, a New York City-based non-profit organization that promotes urban planning and environmentally sound development, is leading the fight to crack down on the offending boxes. Is this an issue that’s near and dear to your heart? If so, you can sign the petition to better maintain newsracks and regulate their placement.
