$10 Million Down the Drain on 1 WTC Feature

By Jordan • May 19th, 2011

Glass panels designed to disguise the otherwise drab, 185-foot tall concrete base of 1 World Trade Center have been nixed after the huge glass panels proved prone to shattering. Unfortunately, this decision comes after $10 million had already been spent on the glass.

The glass was already a bone of contention among champions of the Freedom Tower, which stands to be a symbol of America, because bid winners DCM Erectors and Solera Contruction intended to have it fabricated in China.

It’s impossible to say whether an American company would have had better luck manufacturing the prismatic glass, but Port Authority decided to cut their losses at two years and $10 mil, leaving the disguise of the bunker-like base an unsolved problem.

Despite the setback, Port Authority does not expect a delay in completion of the $3.2 billion, 1,776 square foot tower. Currently at 65 floors and climbing, 1 World Trade Center is scheduled to open in January of 2014.
