Innovative Ways To Brighten Up Your Apartment

Manhattan is notorious for lighting challenges in apartments. With all the surrounding buildings, not to mention gray days, natural light can be hard to come by, and overhead lighting can be a sorry substitute. According to Jason Ball of Jason Ball Interiors, spotlights are the way to go. Above, you’ll see how several pinlights used in place of a lamp hanging over the dining table creates more illumination and space. The mirror provides further light reflection.

The use of a monorail light in this hallway to the left turns it into an instant art gallery. It also gives you light all the way down the hall, as opposed to the sporadic and sometimes overpowering light provided by a single fixture or a couple of recessed cans.

This winning combo below uses small recessed lights around the perimeter to cast light on the art and walls. The white walls add further reflection, and the lighting in the tray ceiling adds a soft, indirect glow.

Kitchens command special lighting needs. Washing, chopping and preparing food all call for direct light that isn’t provided by a single overhead fixture. The kitchen above has used a combination of recessed cans, flexible tracks and under-cabinet lights. You can turn any or all of these on depending on your needs. The under-cabinet lights serve as a great nightlight when you’re sneaking out for your midnight snack!
