Muppet Mansion Sells for a 16% Loss
In 2008, Warner Music Group head Edgar Bronfman purchased the townhouse at 117-119 E. 69th Street, the former home
of Muppets founder Jim Henson, for $28.5 million. After gutting it with plans to renovate, Bronfman switched tacks and moved to London instead. Originally listed last month for $27.25 million, the property was snapped up for $23 million–a 16% loss.
Henson purchased the Upper East Side townhouse in 1977 for $600,000 and transformed it into the Muppets Workshop, where his designers created stories for the legendary kids show.
The buyer of the 12,000 square foot mansion? None other than the Muppets’ own Statler. Or, more precisely, an LLC named after him. There are rumors that the real buyer is Jesse Angelo, editor of Rupert Murdoch’s iPad publication The Daily, but real estate brokers claim even they don’t know who the real buyer of the 40-foot-wide townhouse is.
