38-Story Building Out, Underground Light Garden In for NYU
93-year old architect I.M. Pei had a change of heart about supporting a 400-foot tower for NYU in the landmarked Silver Towers complex, and his buy-in lends enough clout to bring the project to a screeching halt. Instead, NYU will seek approval to build the tower in the non-landmarked Morton Williams supermarket on LaGuarida Place.
The enormous NYU 2031 expansion marches on, though, with a 2 million square foot expansion plan for Washington Square Park. Newly proposed designs include two academic buildings that will be connected by a below-grade facility with gardens and parks at the center. The sloped “Light Garden” will admit light into the underground portion, and street-level retail and community spaces will drive the requisite city buzz. The plan calls for over three acres of publicly accessible open space. Check out these renderings to get a jump on 2031 fashion.
