Shhhh. Secret Entrances to New York Nightlife
What’s more fun than being the person in-the-know about where that unmarked door leads?
Thanks to Urban Daddy, we have the scoop on several hot spots hidden behind the facade of an unassuming restaurant.
Follow your fried-grasshopper-with-cheese delicacy at Casa Mezcal with a visit to The Basement. If you go past the bar and bathrooms, the door will lead you downstairs to another bar, this one with a movie screen, music stage and an alligator skin on the wall.
Slake your thirst with rum punch served in a life-size mannequin while the disco ball spins you into a trance at Riff Raff’s. This crazy Malaysian luau bar can be found by bursting through the steel double doors leading to the kitchen of The Hurricane Club, then hanging a sharp left before you get to the pastry station.
Formerly the dance club Lotus, Abe & Arthur’s pays homage to Meatpacking with its enormous porterhouse steaks, which you can wash down with Veuve, followed by a post-prandial nap downstairs at the Simyone Lounge. Hang a right at the service station, go through the door and down the dark stairs. Your couch will be waiting.
Who doesn’t like a speakeasy? Enter through the unmarked brown door opposite the Black Market bar and enjoy the ambiance. From the owners of such scenes as Bowery Electric and Niagara comes the Cabin Down Below, home to hipsters, rock and booze.
And then there’s XIX (that’s 19, for all those who can’t be bothered with the adding and subtracting of Roman math). This den of decadence can be found by climbing over a velvet rope in the back of Travertine and descending the staircase.
