New Upscale Apartments Going Fast on UWS

For a good deal less than Josh Groban and Marian Gaborik will pay for their rentals at The Corner, you can frequent the same Upper West Side haunts from your apartment at Columbus Square.

But you’ll have to act quickly… two of the buildings in the five-building, 710 unit, $650 million complex are already sold out. One bedrooms starting at $3,500 a month give renters access to Whole Foods, Modell’s, TJ Maxx, and two private schools that are occupying space on the street level of this multi-use development.

So what’s sparking the interest to pay premium price for a building at 100th and Columbus, just blocks from rent stabilized apartments and a public housing project? Experts speculate its billing as a “self-contained village.” In addition to retail, this complex features amenities such as a salt-water pool and 3-block long outdoor sundeck.

Developers Stellar and Chetrit bought the property in 2000 from the notorious Leona Helmsley for $122 million. Now let’s calculate the taxes on that Leona…
