What to Tip Your Building Staff…
…and what happens if you don’t.
‘Tis the season to show your appreciation to those people you see day in and day out, rain or shine, holiday or no holiday. The two weeks before Christmas mark a lucrative (and memorable) time for doormen, superintendents and handymen. Often the tips they get dictate whether they’ll go that extra mile for you in the future. But what is the magic number?
In general, the bigger the building, the smaller the individual tips. Averages for supers or resident managers range between $100-175, while doormen pull in between $75-100; handymen $20-30; and garage attendants $50-75. If you’re on the high maintenance side (come on—you know who you are!), you may find that the willingness to go above and beyond is commensurate with your holiday tip.
While gifts and home-baked cookies are always welcome, cash is definitely king. Among those you are NOT expected to tip—your property manager, contract laborers and your real estate broker!
